Aethelgard

Know who owns the story.

How Aethelgard works

  1. You paste a link. We fetch the page and pull out the article text. If a site blocks us, use the browser shortcut or paste the article text yourself (only the article, not the whole web page; ads between paragraphs are fine). Do not enter any personal information. If an article is behind a paywall and only its start can be read, it is not analysed, because the whole article cannot be completely analysed.
  2. We look up the owner. Ownership comes from a researched table of news outlets, not from the AI. Each entry shows when it was checked, or says it is from public record and not re-checked recently. If an outlet is not in the table, we say so instead of guessing.
  3. An AI reads the text alone. We never tell it which outlet published the article, and we remove sign-up and appeal text first, so the name has little chance to sway its judgment. It rates the article on the scale below and says what position the article pushes.
  4. We check the evidence. Every quote shown must appear word for word in the article. Quotes that do not are dropped, and if none survive the result is marked low confidence.

The 1 to 7 scale

1Neutral. Factual, balanced sourcing, fair wording.
2 to 3Mostly factual, with light framing or emphasis.
4Noticeable slant. Loaded wording or selective emphasis, with other views thin.
5 to 6Strongly one-sided. Persuasion leads, and opposing views are dismissed or missing.
7Propaganda or pure advocacy presented as news.

What the level does and does not mean

  • It rates this one article's text, not the outlet's overall record and not whether the claims are true.
  • Opinion pieces are expected to take a side. They are labelled as opinion and still rated on how one-sided they are.
  • The owner is shown for transparency. We do not claim an owner caused a particular article to be written.
  • The rating is AI-assisted and can be wrong. Read the quoted passages and judge for yourself.
  • Think a level is wrong? Use “Disagree with this level” under the result. We save the level you suggest and your note, not the article text.
